I have to say, I was at first excited when Sarah Palin was named as McCain’s running mate. Not because I’m a Republican, I’m not. While some of my views run only an inch left of center, I am for the most part a liberal and avoid Fox News and the O’Reilly Factor like the plague. I was excited because she’s a woman. The second woman ever to make it on to the presidential ticket. Whether they win or lose an amazing feat, I at first thought. But then inevitably, I heard her speak. She created a huge buzz initially. People were excited by this self-proclaimed “pit bull in lipstick.” For me however, it just strengthened my allegiance to the Obama ticket. This was a woman who promoted abstinence only programs taught in the schools able to say with a straight face that they work. This all on the heels of the revelation that her seventeen year old daughter was knocked up by her hockey stick handling boyfriend. A proud hunter who chases down wolves to the point of exhaustion and will kill anything in her path, save for a 2 month old fetus. In the book Freakonomics, a far more reliable source than Palin, the drop in crime rate in the 90’s in large cities is largely attributed to Roe Vs. Wade as it has been statistically proven that 90% of unwanted children kept by their parents will end up committing a crime. Roe V Wade was passed in 1973. Coincidence that the crime rate dropped in the mid 90’s as a result of women having the right to choose. I think not. Gov. Palin is lauded as the Governor of the largest state in the country. A state which is largely uninhabitable and who’s population is the same size as the city of Memphis, Tennessee. And the general public I assume is flattered by her referring to them as “Joe Six-Pack,” and her constant references to the struggles of soccer moms everywhere. Soccer moms are not whom I first think of when analyzing the turmoil of this country. I for one am not particularly comforted by the thought of the volatile “maverick,” and beauty pageant veteran at the helm of this country when we are inarguably in the midst of a massive economic depression and fighting a war most often compared to Vietnam. I could go on for days about how and why I think voting McCain/Palin will be detrimental to the plight of this country, but I’d rather focus my attention elsewhere and not on the negative. That is my rant for today. Promise to follow with more mind pleasing fodder in days to come. Like my most recent dalliances with members of the opposite sex. GO BARACK! xo
SMILE

I love a good smile. When a guy gives good smile it’s better than anything. I can think of nothing more sexy than being mid flirt and making a boy smile. A real smile when their eyes turn up at the corner and their lips break slowly. It can be because they like the way your hair falls on your shoulders, or your witty repartee, either way it makes me melt. And I’m hardly an easy melter. I was thinking about it because it happened to me recently and those real connections are few and far between. I was talking and he was listening and all of a sudden, he stopped and his face lit up with the most genuine of grins. And it made my day. What part of a man really gets to you, besides the obvious??? I’m interested. Have a great 4th of July!Xoxo,

Sophia
Bartender Blues, Lonely nights...

So things with “the bartender,” (see previous post ATAT), have quickly gone from bad to worse. And by worse, I mean it’s O-V-E-R. Apparently my drunken shenanigans last weekend sealed the deal and I will no longer be receiving naughty after midnight texts soliciting my services, so to speak! So on to the next…… It’s getting warm out and lust is in the air. Looking forward to befriending new cute bartenders in the coming weeks. How else will I get free drinks?? Will update asap.

He did it!

I never thought this would happen in my lifetime, but I’m so glad it did. A black man has clinched the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States. I’m not sure exactly how to express what that means to me. I wish my mother were alive to witness this, she would be beside herself with joy. And the thing is, Barack Obama isn’t just any man. He’s brilliant, inspirational and I think he can help to lift the country from the depths of insecurity and disaster we are currently facing. He also won the race against a woman. While I’m not a huge Hillary Clinton fan, the fact that this unlikely race even occurred is an unprecedented historical event and I feel so lucky to be a part of that. We are currently under the reign of a man who says things like, "They misunderestimated me", "There's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's Texas, probably in Tennessee that says, fool me once, shame on.. shame on you. Fool me.. you can't get fooled again,” These are actual quotes from the genius that is George W. Bush. Fortunately any candidate would be a welcome reprise. But I am wishing and praying (something I don’t normally do), that the President of this country turns out to be the honorable and rather handsome Senator Obama. In other lighter and breezier news, I’m headed to a party in Brooklyn this weekend and I am planning on kissing a few boys, so I’ll update you all early next week. Xoxo,Sophia

My new Summer soundtrack song is most definitely going to be:

Buzzin' by Shwayze. It reminds me of being outside, drinking cold beer and perusing Abercrombie and Fitch catalogs. All my favorite things. Check it, check it out!

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=1Utte1IAUqE

Take a sip

Vodka has been my downfall (aka lover) for most of my drinking years. This affair started roughly at about age fifteen. Beer never quite grabbed my attention in the way that beautiful phallic shaped bottle of clear liquid did. It had too many calories and took too long to get drunk. Plus the taste of yeast and wheat couldn’t be masked by a nice splash of cranberry or a twist of citrus. So it was vodka that stole my heart with abandon, littering my weekends with random hook-ups and blacked out nights. But I can’t say that I regret any of it, because at the end of the day I still L-O-V-E, love vodka. I love vodka mixed with club, I love vodka in the tub, I like vodka in a shot, I’d even drink vodka with a tater tot. Clearly Dr. Seuss has nothing on me. Vodka in a word….it’s inspirational. How many subjects make you break out in rhyme? Point made as far as I’m concerned. Maybe if I wasn’t so enamored with the way it takes on the taste of it’s mixer or that it can make me tipsy in under sixty minutes, I’d be a little more successful in the matters of the heart. But then again, who could ever compete with a dirty Ketel One martini on the rocks, extra olives? Surely not any boy I know. The boys who go up against Mr. Absolut or Senor Grey Goose are at a disadvantage for sure, but what’s wrong with holding a man to high standards? So I’ll continue my search and hope that one day the sight of the right man will make my heart skip a beat just like a perfectly ice filled gimlet. Xoxo,Soph
Thank You

In honor of Memorial Day, I wish to all of our soldiers love, strength, bravery and hope. May all the men we’ve lost in past wars and in this current one live on in the freedoms that they’ve granted us. And hopefully when a new and democratic (cross fingers), president is elected, we can bring these men home. If only integrity existed within the current White House administration, in what a different place we'd be……

Have a wonderful holiday weekend! Drink a lot. I’ll be back with more next week. Toast to our soldiers this weekend.

xoxo,

Sophia
Affairs of the (drunk) heart.......

Have the tables ever turned on you? This boy was REALLY into me.....for quite sometime. The feelings were pretty skewed to my favor and in moments of weakness, I caved. Seems that the chasing has ended on his part. I shouldn't care, but I do.

It's that old adage; you always want what you can't have. Is it wrong to want what you don't have anymore though? Interesting how things can change before you're ready for them to. Depressed, I'm not....it sure is nice to be pursued though. The last couple of months the burner on my stove has been hot, but the past couple of weeks it seems like the fire's out. Even the hot to trot bartender (ATAT sufferer, but still) has waned in his textual advances. Even though I ignored him for the most part, the late night beeps on my phone were always rather welcome. I think next time opportunity knocks, I might just answer the door and keep it open for awhile.

I just bought these sandals at Old Navy

http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/product.do?cid=39211&pid=570930&scid=570930022

and I am L-O-V-E. loving them. The shoes this Summer at ON are fantastical, affordable and hot to death.

And just FYI, I am digging boys who wear cuff links these days. Saw a boy at the bar this weekend sporting a fancy silver pair. It makes the ultimate prepster statement and I am all over that.

What boy trends make you swoon?
ATAT

ATAT As a single girl of 30, I’m resigned to kissing more boys than those that are attached. In recent months, I’ve managed to kiss men all suffering from the same affliction. In illustrative terms, it involves a rather thorough massage of my tonsils. I have decided to dub it ATAT, otherwise known as All Tongue All the Time. I’ve only recently run into this problem and it leaves me wondering…..is this the reason these ATAT offenders are still single? I mean, no girl that has been kissed since they got their braces off could possibly enjoy this. And the guilty parties run the gamut. One was a super hot bartender, who I’m sure has given more than drinks to quite a few of his drink maidens. I expected more. Another I actually engaged in a relationship with…….I should have known that the under par kisses would lead to an avenue of issues. The list does go on, but I’d like to keep my promiscuity at least thinly veiled. I’m not saying that “french” kissing should be off limits all the time, but from start to finish??? Count me out. I’d love to know what type of hook-up moves have left you less than pleased! Leave a comment.

XOXO,

Sophia
Leggings—Don’t do it! Leggings were born in the 80’s, a decade that popularized such gems as leg warmers and lace bandanas. Not exactly the pinnacle of fashion genius as far as I’m concerned. Unfortunately in the last few years there’s been a legging resurrection. I guess if Britney Spears can do it, why can’t the rest of us? I’m not exactly sure why they’ve enjoyed such a rebirth. Maybe nostalgia for Jem and the holograms. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I’m one of the few that hope that the next death they suffer is a permanent one and the reasons why are three fold my friends.

1) They’re unattractive and unflattering. Encasing your thighs in spandex….not such a good idea people.

2) Lindsay Lohan has just come out with a line of them. If that’s not reason enough to close the door on these glorified tights, I don’t know what is.

3) Do you know the girls that still wear black stockings to weddings? That’s what category you’re riding in when you don a pair of striped leggings.

I know I’m going to get a lot of heat for this and I welcome your comments. And trust me I know I’ve had my share of fashion faux-pas over the years, but I am proud to say I’ve never rode the legging train. The next time you’re thinking about rocking a pair, just think….you’re about 4 minutes away from a snap bracelet.

xoxo,

Sophia
Mother's Day

So Mother's day is upon us and I'm wondering.....what do your mother's mean to you? My mother passed away 10 years and 2 weeks ago. She was brilliant (NYU educated), stunningly pretty, incredibly progressive and political and taught me lessons I will never forget. She told me I was smart and beautiful every single day. And happily, more often than not, I believe that to be true. She worked tirelessly with the less fortunate, spending every spare second that she wasn't at one of my gymnastics classes or ballet recitals, tutoring inner city children and teaching her 7th grade Hell's Kitchen classes the rhythmic stanzas of Shakespeare. It was she who taught me to never dumb myself down for a man, to always be refined and knowledgable in conversation and to read more than the person sitting next to me. I'd like to believe she'd be proud of me today. I'm not sure I've succeeded in all aspects of my life, but I'm happy and to her my happiness was paramount. And maybe me writing would fulfill a dream for her, so this is my mother's day gift to her this year.....

I hope that you all spend this weekend with the women that have inspired and taught you. I know I am.

xoxo,

Sophia
SINGLE ON THE SHORE

I've spent the the last 20 + years trying to figure out the opposite sex, while also scouring websites for dirt on Lohan and the perfect shade of blush.. I'm as close to cracking those mysteries as I am to curing Cancer and finding a way to make Stiletto's wear like flip-flops. I'm sure I'm not the only one. That being said, I'd like to share my plight. So right here, every few days or more often, depending on my mood, I'll bring you the candid adventures of a single, (just turned) 30 year old whos' share of flings will surely make the demure blush and give the bad girls ideas! Plus if I have an uneventful run, I'll throw my friends' hijinx into the mix, (don't worry! I won't publish names or distinguishing details, mon amis). I would never fool myself into thinking my own life is enough to sustain you loyal readers, so I am also going to share restaurant & book favorites, bars that I'm obsessed with and my faves in fashion and beauty. Plus the occasional musings on people like the newly minted "Mariah Cannon," (fka

Carey) and Tom "glib" Cruise. I may get serious from time to time, but trust me...those moments will be few and far between. Come along for the ride.
